The Company

Film Cooperative Cagliostro was founded in 1992 in Prague by Finnish-born director and producer Katariina Lillqvist and her colleagues from the legendary Jiri Trnka Studio, where Lillqvist was working as a director after her animation studies during the Nineties. After the Velvet Revolution, Cagliostro was the first foreign studio who started to co-produce stop-motion animations in Prague, and from the beginning, our major partners came from Finland. Finnish Broadcasting company, as well as the Finnish Film Foundation and Promotion Center for the Audiovisual Arts AVEK have been supporting Cagliostro´s projects since then.

Today, Cagliostro has grown from a small, alternative company into an established production house with wide international networks- but without forgetting our indie roots.

The company philosophy of Cagliostro is strongly based on multicultural thesis. We are proud to produce films and events, that are viewed not only by the mainstream audience, but also by marginalized groups like sexual minorities, immigrants, disabled people, Roma communities and war refugees. Art Brut or Outsider Art philosophy has been influencing many of our films, and street art events and countercultural galleries are for us as important and interesting platforms than established festivals.

The name of Cagliostro is a hommage to late Finnish painter and sculptor Juhani Harri who described the life of mysterious Count Cagliostro many times in his dark and surrealistic works.

Currently Cagliostro works in close cooperation with Kreus Film animation studio as well as with the post production studio Signal Generator, both located in Prague. The collection of the puppets, decorations and props from Czech-Finnish co-productions from the years 1991-2026 are stored in Cagliostro´s art residencies in Prague and in Pyhäjoki, Northern Finland.  .
